UNIQUE RMS TITANIC COLOUR BOOKPOST POSTCARD
This unique, colour Bookpost postcard of RMS Titanic, is believed to have been sent by Titanic Saloon Steward, Albert Hector Crisp, to his wife & family.
Crisp married Florence, a widow with two young daughters from her previous marriage, in late 1911.
He joined Titanic in Belfast on the 1st April 1912, having previously worked on board RMS Olympic.
Having used the entire back of the postcard to write his message, he folded the postcard in half and placed it in an envelope, along with a Postal Order for the sum of 2s. 6d., an Easter gift for his stepdaughters.
Crisp gave his address as 37 McNaughton Road, Bitterne, Southampton, where he resided with Florence, her daughters, her parents (her mother's name was Mary, as mentioned in the message) and brother & sister. Florence was also pregnant and gave birth to Minnie Kathleen Joan Crisp on 29th June 1912.
Albert (Bert) Crisp died in the sinking and if recovered, his body was never identified.
WHITE STAR MEMORIES
White Star Memories purchased this postcard in 2024 and it has undergone a long and painstaking restoration process, including the removal of the old tape and the two halves rejoined. The postcard most likely split after being folded in half, to be placed inside an envelope, before being mailed. The envelope, most likely, also contained the postal order (P/O) mentioned in the text. So, the mystery of no address on the postcard is solved.
The image on the front of the postcard is of course, a generic one, used for both Olympic & Titanic, and was no doubt produced before Titanic's fitting out and the alteration to the forward A Deck promenade. The details are also generic with the only difference being the name of the vessel.
What makes this postcard unique is the colour rendering. Only black & white versions have been seen in the past.
Over the past few years, original Titanic artefacts have soared in value and continue to do so, with many, now out of the reach of most collectors. Who knows what this incredible postcard will be worth in the future.....
