TITANIC, A FRAGMENT OF CARPET FROM A 1ST CLASS STATEROOM ON C-DECK CIRCA 1911

a fragment of carpet yarn, of green pattern carpeting removed from the ship as an unused remnant prior to delivery of the ship to the White Star Line.

Footnotes

  • It is widely know that Frederick Dent Ray, a 1st class steward on Titanic, and a survivor, removed several discarded remnants of carpeting from the ship as she was nearing completion. Initially, the carpeting was used as under padding on a music stool at his home. When he was moving, he remembered that it was there, and started sending out pieces to various Titanic survivors and museums. These included Washington Dodge (a survivor) and Edward S. Kamuda (founder of the Titanic Historical Society), among others. This piece of carpet matches exactly the piece on exhibit at the Titanic Historical Society, Inc. at Indian Orchard, Massachusetts.

    Literature:
The Shipbuilder, Special Number on Olympic & Titanic, 1911, pg. 90 for an illustration of 1st class bedroom suite C-63 with this pattern of carpeting.

Titanic Commutator, Volume 18 - Number 3, 3rd Quarter, November 1994 - January 1995, pp. 2-22 for an exchange of letters between Frederick Dent Ray and Edward S. Kamuda, founder of the Titanic Historical Society.

    Provenance:
    - Frederick Dent Ray, 1st class steward on board Titanic, and survivor.
    - Onslow's Auctions Ltd., Dorset, UK by private treaty
    - to the current owner.
